How Far in Advance Should You Book an International Trip?
This depends heavily on the destination's visa process, but here's a general timeline that works for most trips we plan.
8+ weeks ahead: Visa-heavy destinations
Schengen countries (Switzerland, Spain, Greece), the UK, and Australia all benefit from this lead time given visa processing variability.
3-4 weeks ahead: Visa-on-arrival destinations
Thailand, UAE, Sri Lanka and similar destinations with faster visa processes still benefit from booking flights and hotels this far ahead for better rates.
1-2 weeks ahead: Domestic trips
No visa lead time needed — the main benefit of booking earlier here is better flight and hotel pricing, not process requirements.
Peak season adds buffer
Add 2-3 extra weeks to any of the above if travelling during Diwali, Christmas, or summer holiday periods, when demand (and prices) rise sharply.
