Best Time to Visit Kerala: A Season-by-Season Guide

Kerala is one of the few Indian destinations that genuinely has something worth visiting for in every season — the "best" time really depends on what you want out of the trip.

October to February: The Classic Season

This is peak tourist season for good reason — dry weather, comfortable temperatures (20-30°C), and calm backwaters ideal for houseboat cruises. Munnar's hills are at their greenest right after the monsoon tail-end in October. Expect higher hotel prices and more crowds at popular spots like Alleppey and Munnar during December-January.

March to May: Hot but Uncrowded

Temperatures climb into the low-to-mid 30s°C, especially in the plains. Hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad stay more bearable. This period sees noticeably fewer tourists, which means better hotel rates and more flexibility with houseboat bookings — worth considering if you don't mind the heat and want to avoid crowds.

June to September: Monsoon Season

Kerala's monsoon is intense but has a real appeal — lush, almost impossibly green landscapes, dramatically full waterfalls, and the state's famous Ayurvedic treatment season (many practitioners consider monsoon ideal for Ayurveda therapies). Backwater cruising continues, though some activities pause during heavy rain days. This is also when Kerala sees its lowest tourist numbers, if a quieter trip appeals to you.
